Rome Middle Softball vs Model Middle School Recap
ROME, GA— Rome Middle School’s softball game fought hard, rallied to take a lead, and fell just short of another comeback rally on Wednesday afternoon falling to visiting Model Middle School 15-13 in six innings.
Rome’s entire starting lineup made important contributions throughout the contest. After the Wolves jumped to a 2-1 lead after the first inning, Model battled back, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning and two runs in the top of the third inning, retaking the lead at 6-3.
That led to an explosive bottom of the third inning, where Rome’s bats got hot, and the Wolves circled the base path with impunity. Rome pitcher Madyson Thacker led off the inning with a single to right field. She scored, since Thacker was the pitcher Caylel North ran for her whenever she reached base, when Brooklyn Lansdell drew a bases loaded walk a few batters later.
Dahlia Reyes reached first on an infield single and came around to score later when Ella Torimoto grounded into a fielder’s choice. Jenna Beasley singled to right field to base and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Moriah Gyden drew a walk and managed to move to second, third and eventually score off wild pitches. Reese Torimoto also drew a walk before stealing second base and then scoring on a wild pitch.
Thacker got a second chance to bat in the inning and slammed a double into center field, scoring Kenzleigh Tribble, who had reached base on an infield single. All told, the Wolves plated eight runs in the inning, grabbing an 11-6 lead.
Model answered with two runs in the top of the fourth and the fifth inning, cutting the lead to 11-10 before Rome responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Torimoto drew a one-out walk and moved to second base on a single to right field from Tribble before Thacker laced a single to center field scoring them both to up the Wolves’ lead to 13-10.
Model managed to get some base runners in the top of the sixth inning and while Rome made some solid defensive plays, the Blue Devils were able to plate five more runs to take a 15-13 lead.
Rome managed a base runner and brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Model managed to get out of the inning without allowing any runs.
Thacker led the way offensively for the Wolves going 4 for 4 at the plate, scoring two runs and adding 3 RBI. She also pitched all six innings in the circle for Rome, striking out 15 batters. Torimoto and Tribble each provided two hits for the Wolves with Torimoto scoring three runs and Tribble scoring two, respectively. Brooklyn Lansdell added two runs and two RBI as well.
Every player in Rome’s starting lineup either scored a run or recorded an RBI in the effort. The softball team will play again on Tuesday, Sept. 6 against Chattooga at 6 p.m. at Rome Middle School.
